(Washington, DC) – Today Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) was named to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee as well as the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.

“My top priorities in the U.S. Senate are economic growth and job creation, and these committees will provide the platform to do this. If we are going to encourage economic growth we need to address climbing gas prices, ensure our transportation needs are met, and foster a regulatory climate that does not impede interstate commerce. High gas prices and heavy-handed regulations are hurting businesses across our country. As many Nevadans continue to struggle with this tough economic environment, it is critical for our state to have a strong voice at the table to advocate for policies that will encourage job growth.

“Additionally, economic development is often impacted by federal land management because our state is nearly 85% federally controlled. Appointment to these committees gives both urban and rural Nevada an advocate for some of the most important issues facing our communities. Whether working to encourage tourism or renewable energy development, these committees will have direct influence over some of the most important issues for the State of Nevada,” said Heller.

Heller was also named to the Special Committee on Aging, which conducts oversight hearings for programs, such as Medicare, that impact seniors. Throughout its existence, the Special Committee on Aging has served as a focal point in the Senate for discussion and debate on matters relating to older Americans.

“Seniors on fixed incomes often face tough financial choices, especially in difficult economic times. I am committed to the preservation of Social Security and Medicare and fulfilling the promises our nation has made to our aging population. This committee assignment will allow me to continue fighting for Nevada’s seniors,” added Heller.

Official designation of committee assignments will be subject to ratification by the full Senate.
