(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) issued the following statement on the analysis by Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimating the President’s healthcare law could cost taxpayers as much as $2.134 trillion through 2022 alone.

“Nevada families and businesses are already struggling in this current economic environment, and the President’s job-killing healthcare law is making a difficult situation worse. The law’s excessive taxes, expensive regulations, and questionable constitutionality are stripping businesses of the certainty they need to hire at a time when Nevadans and the rest of the country are desperate for jobs.

“This massive federal program will cost taxpayers trillions and force millions of Americans to lose their current health insurance.  Many in Congress warned of these possibilities before this bill became law, but were ignored.  There is no doubt that this law was driven by ideology, not facts,” said Senator Heller

CBO analyzed a number of possible impacts of the healthcare law.  CBO found that under one of their scenarios:

  • The law’s price tag could be as high as $2.134 trillion through 2022 alone.
  • As many as 20 million Americans could lose their employer-sponsored health benefits by 2019.
  • As many as 49 million more Americans could become dependent on government-sponsored healthcare by 2019.
  • Individual and employer mandate penalties may be as high as $221 billion through 2022 alone.
