Today, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced that he will be stepping down from the Supreme Court on July 31st. He has committed his life to upholding the rule of law, and I’m grateful for his decades of service to our country. I wish him the very best in his retirement.

But make no mistake, this is an important moment for our country. Once the  president selects a nominee to fill the upcoming vacancy, I’m hopeful that my Senate colleagues will waste no time in conducting a thorough confirmation process.

Our country needs a qualified successor who will be a fierce defender of the Constitution and will not cower when it comes to upholding our nation’s laws.

We don’t have a minute to lose. Senate Democrats are already threatening to obstruct and delay the confirmation process for whomever President Trump nominates.

The Supreme Court is no place for Justices who want to rewrite the Constitution.

That’s why I will push Senate leadership to move swiftly so that we can put another principled, conservative Justice on our nation’s highest Court next to Neil Gorsuch.
